Christmas Eve, huh? You wouldn’t know it around here. It’s pouring rain. No tree. No decorations. No holiday cheer.

The alleged “magic” of Christmas is supposed to be that people are more kind and generous than usual, right? Little kids get to believe in Santa or whatever, but once you get too old for that, it’s supposed to be about kindness, right?

Well, you won’t find much kindness around here. Just another argument with mom to start off the day. Tomorrow will be just another ordinary day. My father will lie on the couch and watch TV all day, my brother will probably work on his truck, my mom will do whatever she does around the house every day.

In lieu of any sort of family affection or generosity, it would be nice to at least pretend that it’s a merry Christmas. Maybe if we had a nice tree I could stare at it, plug my ears as to not to hear the TV blaring or my father yelling about an inconsequential football game, and pretend that I was in a better place. Like under the mistletoe with Ryan. :(
